The vision of the group Clinical Diagnostics at KIST Europe is the use of volatile metabolites e.g. in human breath to obtain information about the healthy situation of the body under investigation.
Breath Analysis, Pathogens, Ion Mobility Spectrometry, SFB 876
Metabolites represent the final products of genetic expression and iclude the interaction with the environment. Therefore, the comprehensive analysis of large numbers of metabolites has been termed metabolomics.
To realise a qualitative and quantitative analyses which provide a deeper view inside the biochemical status or the phenotype of a cell or an organism the volatile metaboliteds are investigated.
Measurements are realised on metabolites of cells, bacteria, fungi, organs like lung or kidney or the human body using ion mobility spectrometry coupled to multi-capillary columns for effective pre-separation. Parallel measurments are realised using GC/MSD for further validation.
Scientific cooperations are running with the Technical University Dortmund and the University of the Saarland (Saarbrücken and Homburg), the Max-Planck-Instite for Informatics (Saarbrücken) (Research Group Computational Systems Biology), the University Duisburg-Essen, the Lung Hospital Hemer, the Ruhrlandklinik Essen, the University Clinic Göttingen, the New Mexico State University (NM, USA), the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Breath Research Institute and the University of Glamorgan (Wales, UK).
Scientist of the group Clinical Diagnostics are related to the SFB 876 Providing Information by Resource-Constrained Data Analysis". Both, Prof. Dr. Sven Rahmann from the Technical University Dortmund and PD Dr.Jörg Ingo Baumbach from KIST Europe are responsible for the Workpackage Resource-Constrained Analysis of Spectrometry Data.
A common project concerning the development of a rapid test for pathogens, on the basis of ultra-trace detection starts on April 1, 2011.
Lectures are provided at the Faculty Bio- and Chemical Engineering at the Technical University Dortmund on Chemical Process Analysis.
